![]() When WFMU became independent four years ago, we didn't expect Upsala College to declare bankruptcy and disappear overnight. But that's exactly what happened, leaving the station stranded on a deserted 40 acre campus, with two options: buy into the abandoned campus by purchasing the decrepit building we were in, or move. Although we had no money, we started the House of Tomorrow fund, asking listeners to pledge $25 per month to allow the station to make a wise, not a desperate move. Now, two years later, WFMU's 700 House Funders have donated the $200,000 down payment on our new building, plus another $50,000 earmarked for the construction of our new studios. We did this without accepting any money from foundations, the government or corporations. Paying for a new home 25 dollars at a time hasn't been easy, but it's insured the station's independence and freedom. We're moving on our own terms, without making any deals that we would later come to regret. And the money we've raised from this campaign won't simply be spent, but will go into an investment that will grow and stay with he station forever. This year, we're trying to raise the last $100,000 needed to build and move into our new studios. We're trying hard to build the smartest studios that we can for the station, but we need to spend money now in order to save money over the long-term. For example, moving the station's satellite dish to the roof of our new home will cost $9,000, but it will save $60,000 over the next ten years by allowing us to bypass the prohibitive audio transmission rates charged by the telephone company. And that's but one example. By raising the last $100,000 we need now, we can save the station enormous amonts of money in the long run. A regular donation to WFMU helps the station pay for the day to day expenses of staying on the air, but a House of Today donation is a gift that will stay with WFMU forever. If you can help...
