WFMU's been trying to move off the ghost campus of our former owner, Upsala College, for several years now. But 1997 was one of the station's roughest years ever. Shortly after our last marathon, the contract on our new building almost fell apart due to environmental problems. When that was finally cleared up, we purchased our new home and simultaneously entered the great cash-flow crisis of '97. For several months we lacked the money to pay even our most basic bills, and we came close to going off the air. We struggled with this predicament, and desperation led us to even consider dropping our ban (temporarily) on that most heinous form of funding, corporate underwriting.

Fortunately, we reawakened to the fact that giant compromises come in tiny steps, and we hung in until the cavalry arrived in the form of an emergency one-week fundraiser in September. Asking for money on the air for a second time within one year was a big enough compromise for us, and it's one that we hope we won't have to employ again. WFMU marathons have traditionally been a lot of fun for listeners and DJs alike, and keeping it to once a year is the best way to insure that it remains fun. A succesful marathon this month is the best way to make sure that we can keep our marathons fresh and enjoyable, and not have to become a two-marathon per year station.

After a year of false starts and struggle, we're finally ready to move our studios (but not our transmitter) to Jersey City. Work begins on April 20th, and we need to move in by the end of June. (Our current landlord, the Upsala College bankruptcy trustee, has ordered us out of our current studios by that date.) Unfortunately, we currently have only one third of the money needed for the construction and moving expenses, but we're hoping that our listeners will help us raise the additional $100,000 needed during out '98 Marathon.
