JM in the AM

JM in the AM: Broadcasting mitzvahs on the spot for people on the go!

Jewish Moments in the Morning is a source of Jewish pride and unity on your FM dial, a daily commercial-free source of Jewish music, news and views. There's nothing else like it on the radio, and your support of the program is one of the reasons why JM in the AM and WFMU have survived a string of crises that would have destroyed lesser institutions. We've been trying to rise like a phoenix from the ashes of Upsala College, and by all accounts, it's working. With your support during our 1997 marathon, we can make our success last and move our studios off a vacant college campus and into decent quarters in Jersey City.

In 1994, our listeners helped us become independent of Upsala College which had owned WFMU since its inception 1958. Our independence came just in time, as the college declared bankruptcy shortly thereafter. Since our independence, we've been working hard to bring JM in the AM to more Jewish communities, and we've succeeded. Our program can now be heard daily at 90.1 FM throughout the Catskills and the Hudson Valley in Orange, Ulster and Sullivan counties in New York State. In the next few months, we'll make our signal available live on the internet, and Jewish listeners from Boca Raton to Tel Aviv will be able to hear JM in the AM live, as it happens.

But we've been pursuing all these activities from the only occupied building on a vacant, 40-acre college campus. The college's disappearance threw into chaos all the amenities we used to take for granted. Our water gets turned off regularly because, well, we don't have any neighbors who use water. The same goes for our electrical service, only the lights don't go out, they just dim as the electrical current drops from the usual 120 volts to 85, rendering our CD players and computers inoperable. We also suffer from mail and telephone service that would charitably be described as capricious. Then there's the termites, the leaky roof and a neighborhod that is going from bad to worse.

We're ready for better things. WFMU is now ready to move directly into the heart of our listening community. We've finally found a building that's right for us and later this year we hope to move our studios and offices (but not our transmitter) to Exchange Place in Jersey City. From our new building in Jersey City, we hope to interact with the Jewish community of the metropilitan area in ways never before possible, and we expect that this will enhance our efforts in bringing great Jewish radio to more people. The big risk for us (and one that's been deadly to other not-for-profit groups, not to mention a certain college) is dealing with excessive debt. That's why our 1997 marathon is so crucial - it marks the beginning of a fundraising campaign that will hopefully bring our new building's mortgage down to a manageable level.
