New Gadget Madly In Hope
29 May 2011
I whipped up a new app this morning, based, actually, on a feature of my old AMiga audio processing program HARM.
It's called Yes Session, and what it does is rather simple. Turn it on, and tell it your idea.
When it finds a bit of quiet , it will encourage you and egg you on for more ideas.
This version is all audio, but I'm thinking of getting y talented actor wife and her friends to record some video for me that I'll dynamically play in the same way .

Upcoming App news
I have some updates for Droneo and Tondo in the making ... I just need to test them out a bit more. These updates include recording features !
There is also another app in the wings, Ellipsynth, a kind of complicated sibling to sinthicity itself
, which uses roughly the same interface to control polyphonic granular synthesis. Hear it at http://soundcloud.com/jhhl/ellipsynth-taste-1
. My soundcloud
page is actually a good spot for hearing previews of my apps.
Ellipsynth is not the only sibling of synthicity I plan on - there may be a more interesting version with more timbral choices and control options.

synthicity itself 1.0.1
Well, it's been a week, and so it's time for another update to synthicity.... it'll still be simple though.
Among some bug fixes, there are a few features thrown in:
- polyphony expanded to 32 voices. I found that at 8000 and 11025 Hz, synthicity can keep up with this polyphony (you need it if you make the decay really long).
- scales now add a pentatonic minor to the mix, and a "surprise" which is a random bunch of just intervals.
- you can reset the sample rate while the app is "sleeping" in the quick launch.
I'm looking into some way to detect when it can't handle the polyphony load and starts making the UI stutter and the sound stammer.
at 44100, it's about 12 voices, and it gets better as you drop the sample rate.

synthicity is doing nicely
synthicity itself is getting some nice comments in email and on the web.
i hope it catches on, it's lots of fun.
