New CDs, Never Before Offered:
ROCK, ROT, AND RULE CD (Stereo Laffs)
In 1997, WFMU's Tom Scharpling conducted a phone interview with "rock
author" Ronald Thomas Clontel, whose observations of rock history got the
phone ringing off the hook with angry callers. Madness were the first
wave of ska, Neil Young dismissed after only hearing his '80s records,
and the proclamation that anyone without guitars "rots" are only a few of
the critiques made by Clontel and his pals (they work at a cafe in Kansas
called Java the Hut).
DION MCGREGOR / Sleeps Again (Tzadik)
Finally on CD, legendary recordings of a writer sleeptalking (and
sleepranting) in the 1960's, kind of like a Raymondless Peter, uh,
sleeping. Enjoy such ditties as "What a Woman", "The Great Waltz Party"
and the hit "Little Willie Song". Liner notes by McGregor scholar Phil
Milstein.
OS MUTANTES/ Os Mutantes (Omplatten)
Legendary Brazilian trio combined Sgt. Peppers arrangements with
fuzz-soaked psychedelia and uncategorizable influences to create artful,
imaginative songs that were only talked about through the years by fans
like Redd Kross, Stereolab, Beck, and Nirvana (who tried to get the
Mutantes to reunite to open their 1992 South American tour). This, their
first record from 1968, is amazing, and the US reissue features English
translations of lyrics in the booklet.
ANDY BRECKMAN & KEN FREEDMAN / 7 Second Delay CD (Gadfly)
Every Wednesday from 6 to 7 PM on WFMU, the greater NYC/NJ area is
subject to the concept of a freeform station's call-in show, and the end
result is usually Ken mad at Andy. The definitive document.
METALLICA DRUMMER! Video (Metallica Drummer)
"He's home alone and he wants to rock. He's Canadian, he's obsessed, he's
Metallica Drummer." 15 year-old playing air drums (and air "face" if that
makes sense) precisely and succinctly to songs from Metallica's
self-titled album. The most compelling document of American Rock Youth
since "Heavy Metal Parking Lot".
VARIOUS / VOX POPULI - AMERICANA VOLUME 1 (Citizen Kafka)
One man bands, children's records, "outsiders" and more unknown American
musical heroes, compiled by Citizen Kafka of WFMU's Secret Museum of the
Air. Includes Ellis Chadbourne, Gordon Thomas, and the amazing Jimmie
Vestal's "Fishin' Rod Eddie".
CELEBRITIES AT THEIR WORST / VOLUME 2 (Mad Deadly Worldwide Gangster)
A 2 CD set of the ugliest sides of some of the world's most beloved
figures. Shudder to the nonstop collage of Barbara Streisand obscenities,
scratch your head to a James Brown TV interview, roar at the entire
second disc of roast outtakes. Also features the infamous Linda McCartney
tape as well as the genius live recording of Venom's between-song banter
at a City Gardens show in the 80s.
VARIOUS / ETHIOPIQUES VOLUME 3 (Buda Music)
French import collection from the heralded series of 1960's-70s Ethiopian
dance band recordings from the Amha label which thrived despite the
political tension in the country at the time. This volume focuses on
institutional bands actually attached to police units, and showcases some
fierce, pumping jazz-funk bands with traditional roots, brass and string
bands, and more.
VARIOUS / MSR MADNESS VOLUME 3 / HUMAN BREAKDOWN OF ABSURDITY (Carnage Press)
New volume of the infamous MSR recordings where average, ordinary folks
send in their lyrics and poems to be recorded in song form. And the catch
was that they would record ANYTHING. Hum along to Terri Summers' "City's
Hospital Patients", Ron Davis' "Escape From Society" and the unknown
classic "I Lost My Girl to An Argentinean Cowboy."
VARIOUS / MSR MADNESS VOLUME 4 / I'M JUST THE OTHER WOMAN (Carnage Press)
Even more undiscovered hits including Kay Weaver's "Disco Midnight",
Trendy's "Facts About Crack" and Bobbi Blake's inexplicable "Betsy and
Her Goat".
DAVE SOLDIER with KOMAR & MELAMID / The People's Choice (DIA Center)
A study in musicology and populism. After a heavy-duty poll of what
people like and don't like in a song, the results are actually made into
real life music. The Most Popular song, of course, combines all those
subjects folks love into a slick anthem; the least popular, well, in our
opinion is the better, incorporating kids, holidays, country, and other
annoyances to the mass populace. Sing along.
PNEUMERSHONIC / Frequencies of the Beast (Trayful of Labmice)
A mystical mindblow from New Hampshire's very own Sun Ra/Moondog, a
fellow named Paul Bourre. Includes "Hippy Freakout", "Martian
Girlfriend" and more.
VARIOUS / GOOMBA PARTY - Broken English Jive 1907-89 (Mangia)
Yikes. Well, if the world at large can deal with the "Mob Hits" CD
available on TV, someone decided to take it a step further. Actual,
historic 20th Century recordings about, well, alleged Italian-American
concerns. The guy who put this out should enjoy what's left of his life.
VARIOUS / MARC BOLAN - Great Jewish Music (Tzadik)
This follow-up to Tzadik's Serge Gainsbourg tribute (yep, he was Jewish
too) features mostly downtown NYC luminaries putting interesting spins on
the music of Bolan and T-Rex. Includes contributions from Arto Lindsay
and Marc Ribot, Sean Lennon and Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto, Lloyd Cole,
Tall Dwarfs and many more.
BUTTERSCOTT / Great Scott (Butterscott)
The one-man bubblegum bedroom pop genius of Jonathan Scott (never heard of
him? Well, you probably will someday soon) comes up with 23 sugary nuggets
that remind one of Chris Knox if he was surrounded by more Archies records.
VARIOUS / THEY CAME, THEY PLAYED, THEY BLOCKED THE DRIVEWAY (WFMU)
WFMU's first live 2CD collection from 1993, with ESG, Jeff Buckley with
Gary Lucas, Daniel Johnston, Hasil Adkins, Swans and more, all recorded
in our East Orange studios.
VARIOUS / UPSALAPALOOZA (WFMU)
Our second 2CD collection with Stereolab, Michael Hurley, Peter
Holsapple, Giant Sand, Cordell Jackson, Amy Rigby and more live at WFMU.
FAMILY FODDER / Savoire Faire, the Best of Family Fodder (DBC)
1978-81 recordings of this terrific Anglo-French avant-pop outfit who
have been compared to Stereolab, Blondie, and the Residents. A
comprehensive overview.
BOMBAY THE HARDWAY CD (Motel)
The sheer volume of music-oriented films churned out in Bollywood created
an incredible backlog of sounds waiting to be sifted through and
rediscovered; here Dan the Automator takes listeners on a journey through the wild, funky
compositions from the golden age of Indian cinema.
