The bad news is downright scary. The House of Today A special appeal to WFMU's most Dedicated Listeners: Three years ago, it was clear that WFMU would have to either move, or buy into a vacant college campus. Although we had no money for a down payment, we made the long-term choice and opted to buy a building and move. Dear Web Listener, For a few hours last August, all of WFMU 's stuff was locked inside two 45 foot long boxes that were sent hurtling 14 miles down Route 280 East. If a giant sinkhole had swallowed both tractor trailers whole, few people would have been surprised. The last ten years have been like that for us. But the trucks arrived at our new home on Montgomery Street, and the light at the end of our tunnel finally flickered on. Of course, even if that sinkhole had appeared, all would not have been lost. We may have been able to cram all of our turntables, junky old file cabinets and records into two trucks. But it's our listeners, now spread out over the region and all over the country, that give the station life. WFMU's listeners have rare enough taste in music, sound and ideas that we've been able to survive these last ten years of turmoil with our integrity and sense of humor intact, and our dedication to freeform radio, with all of its glorious contradictions, unfazed. Since 1989, we've struggled with hellish litigation and the bankruptcy of our former owner, followed immediately by our sudden independence and eviction from Upsala College. We met these challenges with a mad rush to ensure our continued survival by expanding our programming onto the Internet and at 90.1 fm, and by buying and moving into our own building. By all measures, it's been a success. But we've also been left with a huge backwash of debt, unpaid bills and unfinished studios. We desperately need to finish our construction and keep the repo man at bay. We've never accepted funding with strings attached, and with your continued support, we never will. With your help, we can wipe away the residue of our decade of tribulation. We're hoping that you'll help us do it by making a tax-deductible pledge to WFMU. We're trying to raise enough money to operate for another year and finish building our new studios and offices. Regular pledges go towards the station's ongoing operating expenses, and House of Today pledges will be used exclusively for the long-awaited completion of our new studios. I hope you'll be able to help us by making a pledge through our web site, Great tchotchkes await those listeners who meet us at the gate of great freeform radio.
