WFMU's been
trying to move
off the ghost
campus of our
former owner,
Upsala College,
for several
years now.
 But 1997 was
one of the
station's roughest
years ever...

When WFMU became
independent four
years ago, we
didn't expect
Upsala College
to declare
bankruptcy and
disappear
overnight.
 But that's exactly
what happened...

Who's on with whom,
When.

Dear Web Surfer,

WFMU went on the air 40 years ago next month, and within a decade, the station dedicated itself to a set of principles that have proven deadly for most other institutions - high ideals (with next to no money to execute them), a fervent dedication to free expression, and an unwillingness to compromise on any of the fundamentals. To the uninitiated, it reads like a recipe for disaster. But WFMU has not only survived, in many ways it's thrived - and it's done so without selling out.

The station's success and longevity is due to our wildly diverse array of programming, and our long-term love affair with the most dedicated and remarkable listening audience known to radio. And because we've never accepted funding with strings attached, we've gone through some scary, poverty stricken times, but we've never lost our way. The foundation of this philosophy is the WFMU Marathon, an annual two week orgy of fundraising, prizes, and DJ self-degradation that is the cornerstone of the station's survival and independence.

This year, the station is (finally) poised for the most exciting chapter in our history - moving our studios into our own building in the heart of our listening community. I hope that you'll help celebrate WFMU's past, and propel us into the future by making a tax-deductible pledge during our 40th Anniversary marathon from March 16th to 29th. This year we're trying to raise enough money to stay on the air for another year, and also raise the last $100,000 needed to build and move into our new studios. Regular pledges go towards the stations ongoing and bare-bones operatng expenses, and House of Today pledges will be used exclusively for the creation of our new studios.

I hope you'll be able to help us by responding with this brochure, or by calling us during our marathon at 800-989-9368 or 973-678-5400. Great tchotchkes will anoint those listeners who walk with us in our great work. Check out the list for more info on this year's shameless merchandising.

As in the past few marathons, we'll have dozens of CD giveaways for folks pledging exclusively on the web.

In any case, thanks for taking the time to read this. I hope we hear from you during our marathon.
