WFMU's Shameless 1996 Grovel

March 11 - 24, 1996

At 'FMU, we try to do radio right, which means giving good DJ's total control over their own programs. It also means not accepting money from outside institutions or from commercial "underwriting" announcements. That's why we seek your pledges so shamelessly during our annual marathon. Our freedom comes from the fact that our support is spread out among our listeners, readers and web-surfers.

If you want to keep freeform radio kicking, make an on-line pledge to FMU. You'll be eligible to win CD's and you'll automatically receive those wondrous WFMU tchotchkes. A year ago, we were celebrating because we had purchased our FCC license from Upsala College, making us the only department to survive the 103 year-old college's bankruptcy.

But we now find ourselves the only occupants of a 37 acre ghost-campus. The contents of the neighboring 25 buildings have been auctioned off, and now our house is up for grabs.

We now have to choose between eviction, or purchasing a building in what is quickly becoming a no-man's-land. With your help, we can raise enough money to stay on the air, and to move our studios and offices on our own terms.

Fortunately, many good things are happening at WFMU, even as the College has crumbled around us. We're about to make our signal available on satellite and double our coverage area into New York State. We've also had great success with our catalog and record fairs, which raise funds for the station and introduce WFMU to people all over the country. And if all goes well, we hope to soon make our actual programming available on the internet. Needless to say, all these activities are threatened if we have to put most of the station's equipment and library into storage and broadcast from temporary studios - our current "worst-case" scenario.

We hope you'll be able to help secure WFMU's future by pledging via this web page or by calling us during the marathon at (201) 678-5400. Either way, we've got some particularly wonderful stuff as a way of thanking you for your help. Check out the designs for this year's tchotchkes, and our beloved web site surfers are eligible for special CD giveaways online.

"House of Tomorrow" fund will be the key to our ability to move on our own terms. We're trying to find 400 extremely committed listeners to pledge $25 a month for one year.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope to hear from you during the marathon.
