live at the old dutch church

Mamalama recorded an album of songs in Kingston, New York's historic and beautiful Old Dutch Church in September of 2015. We've been playing these songs for a long time in our concerts, and are happy to have them available as beautifully performed recordings!
We celebrated the release of this new album - with physical CDs and cake - at the combined "Live at the Old Dutch Church CD / Birthday party" on October 1st, at the Old Dutch Church in Kingston itself!

Hudson Valley Band Mamalama : New Album Live at the Old Dutch Church

The Hudson Valley based art band Mamalama has announced the release of their third album Live at the Old Dutch Church.

Mamalama spent three years writing and fine-tuning the songs captured on the new album. After extensive creative collaboration, the band recorded the album in the sanctuary of the Old Dutch Church for three days in late September 2015. Although, Mamalama is a secular ensemble, the band's instrumentation lends itself well to performance in a church setting. Fortunately, the congregation at the Old Dutch Church was extremely generous in allowing Mamalama to use their sanctuary space for the creation of the band's latest release.

Mamalama is fronted by founder and composer Elizabeth Clark on harp, piano and vocals. The rest of the group on this recording includes Henry Lowengard on hammered dulcimer, glockenspiel, recorder, and melodica; Rusty Boris on bass, Eric Ortner on violin and French horn; Cornelia Logan on cello; and Annie Roland backing vocals and octave mandolin.

All of the tracks were recorded live in the church with minimal use of overdubs. Elizabeth Clark said, “When it came time to start considering how we would begin capturing these songs in a recording, I wanted to be creating and expressing the music in a space that feels sacred. To enter a vast, open sanctuary somehow draws us inward. On a simply technical level, we really wanted to be somewhere with a large open hall to capture the natural atmospheric beauty of Mamalama's acoustic instrumentation. I've always been a fan of the natural reverb in the Old Dutch Church, as the building is an instrument all on its own. Both the building — and its giant pipe organ — are guest performers on this album.”

The seven tracks published on Live at the Old Dutch Church are: Passion of Cloud, To See if Love Can Fly, Standing on Serpents, Hallelujah, Looking Up, Falling Down, La La La, and Silver Fire. Each song has a distinctly different orchestration. The album explores mythologies, spiritual imagery, and the practice of love through a synesthetic lens.

The raw tracks from the session at Old Dutch Church were taken to Clandestine studios, also in uptown Kingston. They were mixed and produced over the course of a year by Brian Macaluso, who also worked as the album's recording engineer.

Passion Of Cloud

Lyrics
Passion of Cloud:

Qui sunt hi
Qui ut nubes
Qui sunt hi ut nubes
pluma cecedit
silenta
spiritus
 levavit
qui sunt hi
ut nubes

who are you that comes like cloud
lifted up with body down
silent feather on the ground
brought me to my joy

rise into your music
moves like cloud
moves like water
brought me to my joy

who are you that comes like cloud
lifted up while kneeling down
blossoms falling to the ground
blossoms falling all around

waves are light
and light is sound
here your Love
flooded my house
I hear
what you said
what you said
the birds fly out
my open mouth
love come down
love come down
as promised!

To See If Love Can Fly

Lyrics

To See if Love Can Fly:

been so afraid of diving in
to deeper places never known
this mask we painted, it's not our face
it's only what we hide behind

just bring it into the light
to where the stars can shine
just lay it under the sun
where it can be seen

to see if love can fly
we'll throw it over the side
of this cliff
and if it doesn't die
we'll know the reason why
is love

Is there anything left
for us to do
I've seen your demons,
and I know your fruit
blind and holding onto
things unseen
will we fall down
will we fall down
you've been behind the walls of my heart
and bled your colors into mine
I've seen your darkness
and you see me
through a veil
through a veil.

To see if love can fly
we'll throw it over the side of this cliff
and if it doesn't die
we'll know the reason why
is love

Straight through day is night again
on through day, the night again
straight through day into night again
on through night into day, to day

day so long like night, like night
night so long like day like day
days so long like night, like night
night so long, the day, the day

can you feel my heartbeat
it echoes from your chest
you are half my heartbeat
it echoes from your chest

you are just that part of me
that part of me that I can't love

Standing On Serpents

Lyrics

Standing on Serpents:

born
into flesh
first light of earth
breath, sweet breath
all things we touch
and our eyes can see
the colors of earth
so we crawl to rise
to our feet

born
into flesh
first light of earth
lost, we forget
our place in the stars
and our eyes
can't see
the beauty of earth
so we crawl to rise
to our feet
bow low to rise
to Your feet

I hear you still calling
a slight of hand so clear to me
but my love it only rises
you whisper straight to me
and try to steal my love away
but I know you know, I know you now.

I stand on
the heads of
serpents, ascending rising
above all
your demons
like those that would cling to
His resurrecting body
your power, it weakens
in me

Hallelujah

Lyrics

Hallelujah:

Hallelujah
What have we done
done to Your name?
All that we've done
done in Your name.

Do you know Who I am ?

Looking Up, Falling Down

Lyrics
Looking Up Falling Down:

I've been down so many roads
I've been down on my knees
I've been down beneath the sea
I've been down to Mexico

I've been up to no good
I've been way up above the clouds
I've been up to something no one knows
I've been up to Canada at least 5 times

We are looking up
while we're falling down

I've been into things whole heartedly
I've been into paint and poetry
I've been in between a rock and a hard place
I've been in the dark and in the light
I've been behind the scenes so many times
watching the people all exchange their lines
I've gotten over love that's over me
I've fallen into love

We are looking up
while we're falling down

Who knew
sorrows repeated
And to love yourself is not enough
to love your friends is not enough
to love what you have always hated
and despised
is where love grows tall
to love yourself is not enough
to feel your heart beats blood like blood like mine
to know that this will be enough
to fill the hole of being alone

I am looking up while falling down
now looking in
to find you looking out.
La La La

Lyrics

La La La:

Such strange gravity
changing color
watch time
go blind
all we know
praise light
watch time
go blind
praise shadow
praise light

kill this nonsense slavery to our own invention!

such strange gravity
changing color
watch time
go blind
all we know
praise light
praise shadow
praise light

kill this nonsense slavery to our own invention!

let's go let's go
la la la la la la la la la la la la la

now the lion goes
"prrrrrrr......meow"
Silver Fire

Lyrics

Silver Fire:

Paint me as I am
paint the scars and flowers
paint what's here in the end
a gaze like silver fire

speak your riddles into me
into my ear your rose
I've known nothing but this cold
and in your eyes is fire

Are you you
are you me
a gaze like silver fire
the ghost in me looks out
looks into you

are you really what I see
do we really know anything at all
about fire

but I'm too late
to be your rose
your too late
to be my rose
fall into the arms that are made of love
fall into the arms that are made of love
hollow wide
hollow wide
it's time to part

waiting on the shore
to bring this dark to light
into this wound we dive
meet me on the other side
